Tron: Legacy was without a doubt one of Disney’s most tainted successes of 2010, sure I loved the movie, but there were many who didn’t. Regardless, it still made a pile of cash at the box office, becoming highest grossing live-action film of all time for a first-time director, but this was largely due to the marketing campaign and the army of faithful bloggers pushing the film out into the far corners of the Internet.
With Tron still to hit the DVD and Blu-ray market, Disney have yet to make a decision on whether or not a sequel will get the go ahead, regardless of this, Tron: Legacy director, Joseph Kosinski, has already started work on the as yet untitled Tron 3.
Talking to Assignment X, the director announced that he is currently working on a third script and shared his thoughts about where the property could go from here:
“Dillinger [David Warner] was a really important part of the first film and felt like an easy way to continue that story line and thread to have his son in the new movie. That way you have people ask those questions of what the Dillinger legacy is in the world of Tron. We didn’t want to ignore it completely and it leaves a really nice springboard for some intertwining development for the next film.”
Another thing he seems happy to share with the world is his proposed villain. Given the long-held opinion of fans that Cillian Murphy would reprise his as-yet un-credited role as Dillinger’s son, you’ll not be surprised to hear that this line of thinking seems to be spot on the mark:
“Dillinger [David Warner] was a really important part of the first film and felt like an easy way to continue that story-line and thread to have his son in the new movie,” says Kosinski. “That way you have people ask those questions of what the Dillinger legacy is in the world of TRON. We didn’t want to ignore it completely and it leaves a really nice springboard for some intertwining development for the next film.”
So while the film has still to be given a green light, and Kosinski has yet to be signed onto the project as director, you can sleep easy in the knowledge that someone, somewhere is already planning our next trip to the grid!
